1. Sports are often described as "poetry in motion." Do you agree with this comparison? Why or why not? Then write a poem depicting a specific, detailed sports moment that represents "poetry in motion."
2. The obvious difference between poetry and music is the inclusion of instrumental backgrounds. Add instrumentals to poetry, take them away from music. Which sounds more natural?
3. Write a poem that can be read both top to bottom and bottom to top. Then write a poem that can be read both right to left and left to right.
#1 and #2 are good problems to get the solver thinking about how poetry is related to other subject areas. #3 I think would be a difficult challenge for most people, and it's an interesting expansion on the format we've seen in the Leadbelly poems.

ReplyDeleteWell there's the obvious solution to #3 - write a poem that has "mirror lines"; for example, if a poem had 5 lines, you would have lines 1 and 5 be the same, 2 and 4, and 3 would be its own unique line. However, that is easier said than done; not to mention it would be the same poem reading from top to bottom vs from bottom to top, and that's not the goal of question 3. Truly a challenging experiment to undertake.

ReplyDeleteI've never heard sports being described as "poetry in motion" but that's a fair comparison. As for number two, lyrics are a really important part of music for me, which is why I dislike most pop music, because of shitty repetitive lyrics. But writing poetry and writing lyrics are really quite different experiences - trying to put poetry to music can seem all wrong, and writing lyrics down without their tunes can seem all wrong too. It's a delicate balance.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the first statement: poetry can be sports frozen out of motion, but necessary vice versa. We can't simply describe things as poetry if they flow in an aesthetically pleasing way. Rather, there is motion in poetry, and also similar motion in sports.
ReplyDeleteHowever, "Old Men Playing Basketball" is an excellent poetry in motion poem if you have to provide one.
All three of the problems are really interesting, but I think your last one is definitely my favorite! I think it would be pretty challenging to write a poem that can be read that many ways, but also the end result would be super cool. I've also never heard of sports as "poetry in motion" but I think that would make for a more interesting blog post.

For #1, I've never heard of sports described as "poetry in motion," but that's an interesting idea. I wonder how something like dance or even drama would fit into that, because I also feel like those could be described as poetry in motion. The second one is also really interesting. I don't really know much about the song-writing process, but I wonder what typically comes first: writing the lyrics or the instrumentals?

I also really enjoyed the third prompt, as figuring out the logistics of that seems potentially quite fun, and it would be interesting to see the final poem.

I'm so excited. My ex-boyfriend is back after a breakup, I’m extremely happy that will are living together again.
My boyfriend of a 4yr just broke up with me and am 30 weeks pregnant.
